Obstacle warning light

Year of manufacture: approx. 1950 - 1990
Manufacturer: Elektrosignál Prague
Description: An obstacle warning light for air traffic. It is installed on high buildings and masts. The light consists of a gas tube supplied with high voltage from a stray field transformer. The tube is filled with a low-pressure mix of gases. The high voltage rips electrons out of the electrodes. The electrons fly through the tube, collide with the gas atoms and pass energy to them. The atoms get rid of the energy in form of a visible light. The wavelength of the light, or color, depends on the gas. The red color of this light is provided by neon gas.
