Mercury oscillator

Description:

This device was used as an oscillating switch e. g. for railway crossing warning lights. When connected to power, the filament heats up the gas inside the tube. The volume of the gas increases and the mercury is pushed into the second bulb. After the mercury flows into the second contact, a relay disconnects the filament circuit, the gas cools down and the mercury flows back and the contact opens. Then the process repeats itself.
